best of davis, winter '13

between issues finding life balance and unexpected pet death, this blog has been a bit of a downer lately.  while i do think it's important to portray a realistic image of what day to day life is like for us, that also means plenty of reasons exist for us to smile, laugh, and be happy.  in fact, those are our overwhelming emotions at any given time.  so, i just wanted to stop in, in the middle of winter, and note some of the things we're most thankful for.

1.  it gets greener here in the winter.  these foothills are a lovely golden in the summer, lush and green in the winter.  winter here is definitely not a time of death and hibernation.

2.  backyard picnics.  the luxury of a) being able to open a door and play outside in your own yard without b) needing even a jacket...priceless.  and speaking of backyards, ours is about to become home to a peach, plum, apricot, tangelo, nectarine and meyer lemon tree.  that's pretty awesome.

3.  flowers already starting to bloom on the trees again...maybe spring actually starts in march here?

4.  proximity of many beautiful places that we continue to take advantage of, below is yosemite:

5.  a bathtub fit for playing.

6.  citrus fruit.

7.  year-round community activity.  i love to go outside on a weekend, even in the middle of winter, to see so many families strolling downtown, playing at the parks, and chatting with neighbors.

8.  it's evidently a very long season for berries here...february to october?!

9.  the kindness of neighbors.

10.  family and friends, new and old.  pictured below is jeannette's 70th birthday party, which you can read more about here.
